UAE labour ban 1 year

A UAE labour ban option for 1 year is now available according to various reports, including one in the Gulf News (also in Arabian Business and The National). If a worker in the UAE files a case with the labour court, and loses, then as extra punishment they’ll get a one year labour ban (previously was no ban penalty). Good job UAE for moving forward in leading the way for improving the conditions of workers and labourers. The rest of the world will no doubt be looking on in admiration at the forward thinking policies for workers’ rights in the UAE.

Ok, well, to be fair to the UAE labour department, there is a proviso in that it seems to apply only to those who are on temporary work permits because they’ve filed a dispute with the UAE labour courts - allegedly some workers are using this to make claims just to get a temporary work permit and avoid a ban. More clarification is required (as always with these sorts of things).

Saif Al Suwaidi, acting executive director for labour affairs at the Ministry of Labour, reportedly said “The objective of this procedure is to stop workers who fabricate disputes with their employers and take them to court with the aim of extending their stay in the country by obtaining a temporary work permit,
